CHOREA GALA 2017 – Open Air gala dedicated to the best Slovak dance artists working abroad

ABOUT THE CONCEPT

For many years, Slovakia has been producing great dancers and choreographers that are able to more than succeed on the global dance scene. Slovaks are a part of world-class dance companies, many times as soloists or first soloists and so help shaping the face of world dance. CHOREA festival pays tribute to them by inviting them to present their world-class prowess on home stage to remind Slovakia of how much it can be proud of.

Besides that, CHOREA brings modern ballet of world’s companies to give Slovakian audience a complete insight of current affairs of the dance world.

ABOUT THE SHOW

Pendiente is a duet inspired by the famous novel by Gabriel Garcia Marquez “Chronicle of a Death Foretold”. It addresses recurring themes in the novel such as a prohibited love, violence, revenge and disdain. García Marquez’ work, an essential part of Latin American cultural identity, serves as a meeting point for the three creators of this piece: Raúl Maduro, sound artist from Curaçao, Diego Vázquez, Mexican dancer and choreographer and Faizah Grootens, dancer and choreographer from Curaçao.

False Cognate is a solo inspired by the relationship the choreographer has with the Bible and the confrontation he suffers through it. It is a personal journey that originates in the mind, and arises from confusions that might occur during an inner conversation. There are misinterpretations in meanings and significations, when one comes to believe concepts that are a lie, an illusion or an unresolved riddle.

Choreography: Diego Vázquez (False Cognate), Faizah Grootens & Diego Vázquez (Pendiente)

Costume design: Faizah Grootens & Diego Vázquez

Croatian National Theatre Split – 5 TO 12

ABOUT THE COMPANY

We have always admired that vigorous individual on the stage dramatically colliding with senseless norms, narrow mindness, conformism and tyranny. Unique esthetical and social experience of direct contact with a live person on stage, in a collective exercise of thoughts inspired by our failed expectations, enables us to experience emotional earthquakes and we leave the theatre stronger and ready to confront reality. Or that is how we should feel leaving the theatre.

Does the theatre today have such power and are we today, in times of bad times, capable of such confrontation? We invite you to verify this together.

Welcome to the Croatian National Theatre Split!

Goran Golovko, General Manager

ABOUT THE SHOW

Modern ballet by Igor Kirov with dynamic music by Kiril Džajkovski captivated the audience at the première during the 61st Split Summer Festival while 7000 spectators saw it in the very first year.

In a life game, we are provoked by different triggers and motives. In a dance game we are primarily motivated by music, in this ballet it is carefully selected and passionately lived out by Kiril Džajkovski, making it the centre of choreography impulse leading us into a world of cubes full of colours, energy and danced with love.

This world was dreamt by Igor Kirov, the choreographer, as a perfect set of 12 cubes in 12 acts with 12 dancers well aware that every dream of perfection can easily fall down like a house of cards and starting it all over playing the new game called “5 till 12”.

Ballet Finland – Seven & Red Light Drowning

ABOUT THE COMPANY

The audience should receive interesting and enjoyable experiences when watching a performance. Experiences that awaken feelings and opinions, and that are later a good topic for a conversation together. These are experiences, which offer a brief break from the rat race of our daily lives. With these thoughts in mind the artistic director Ville Valkonen has composed the current group of Ballet Finland to perform new ballet at its best. The company consists of talented and persistent dancers, who are all professionally trained ballet dancers. They perform numerous different choreographies that intend to awaken new interest towards the field of ballet both in Finland and around the world.

VILLE VALKONEN
Artistic Director, Choreographer

Ville Valkonen graduated as a dancer from the Finnish National Opera Ballet School in 2007. Afterwards he has danced with the Estonian National Ballet, Finnish National Ballet and numerous theaters in England and Germany.

As a choreographer, Ville started his career with the piece Shining, which premiered in Nürnberg State Theater in 2011. His choreographing career has then continued with Ballet Finland, Finnish National Ballet and the Finnish National Opera Ballet School. Some of his best-known pieces are Seven (for Ballet Finland), Cluster of Flowers (for Finnish National Opera Ballet School) and So You Think You Can Muuv (a collaboration between Finnish National Ballet and Ballet Finland).

Ville joined Ballet Finland in 2012 as a dancer. In January 2014 he begun his work as the artistic director of the company, still continuing to dance and choreograph with the company.

”When I dance, my soul is free and my worries disappear. Dance is the way of expression I surrender myself for. It is an escape from the everyday life, the moment that dreams and love create.”

ABOUT THE SHOW

Seven is tribute to the Finnish master and grand composer Jean Sibelius. Seven dancers interpret the last work of the composer, the 7th Symphony, and bring a range of emotions, beauty and flashes of the human life on stage by means of modern ballet.

Red Light Drowning brings you a choreography made with video projections. They both dance hand in hand bringing you down to a journey of red light. How deep can you go when the creativity takes you in its control?
